New Smyrna Speedway is one of the nation’s biggest short-track racing venues, with a capacity of around 40,000 spectators, and it hosts some of the top events each year.
The 1.25 mile dirt oval in New Smyrna, Florida is owned and operated by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., who also own and operate other big tracks such as Atlanta Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Homestead Miami Speedway, and more. The track was originally built in 1947 and has been a motorsport venue ever since.
Though New Smyrna’s main competitor is Talladega Superspeedway, it still holds its place among the short-tracks because of its fantastic atmosphere and high attendance numbers. The 1.25 mile dirt oval occasionally hosts ARCA, NASCAR, and IndyCar events, along with plenty of weekly racing throughout the year.
The Track’s Layout
New Smyrna’s layout is perfectly suited for racing events, providing lots of room for maneuvering and spectacular views of the action from every seat.
The track is banked slightly uphill in most places to provide an effective drag and improve the handling of the cars. The front straightaway is extremely long and allows for some spectacular overtaking maneuvers. In addition, the track features a couple of huge hairpins before the back straightaway, which gives the drivers a second chance at passing cars.
What makes the track even more intriguing is the fact that it is very narrow, with only three lanes plus a center white line dividing the cars. Therefore, unlike most other tracks, the cars do not seem to naturally flow around the outside area of the track, which makes it easier for the drivers to pass others. In fact, New Smyrna is often referred to as the “narrow” track.
The Track’s Features
Though much of the track’s charm comes from its setting, the layout, and the atmosphere, it also boasts some incredible features. These include the grandstands, which are located along both the back and front straightaways, as well as the light towers that dot the perimeter of the track. Not only do the grandstands provide some fantastic views of the racing, but they are also a great place for fans to congregate, meet friends, and socialize.
If you love cars and motorsport, you will enjoy the experience of watching the various races at New Smyrna Speedway.
