In this article, we will give you the lowdown on one of the most unique venues in all of motorsport, and how big is it really?
A Brief History Of Seekonk Speedway
Seekonk Speedway is located in Seekonk, Massachusetts, and it was first opened to the public in 1921. The track originally went by the name of New York Speedway when it was constructed, but it was later changed to its current name in honor of the town’s successful bootstrap industry. Since its inception, the track has been home to some of the biggest names in motorsport. In fact, many consider it to be one of the most historic racetracks in existence.
Over the years, the track has hosted some pretty incredible races, including the prestigious Indianapolis 500. In fact, it was the first oval track to host the prestigious Indy 500. In 1921, the inaugural running of the Indy 500 took place at New York Speedway. Since then, it has hosted the greatest race in North America every year. In addition, the 500 was first run on a Friday because the Indianapolis race director at the time felt the prior Thursday night race had taken a bit too much out of the riders’ legs. Today, the Indy 500 is one of the last races on the season’s circuit, so it definitely pays to be on the lookout for ticket deals!
Another big race that took place at the track was the USAC Championship. This series was a precursor to the Indycar Series and it ran from 1922 to 1934. In fact, Alfred “Alfie” Isaac was the first African-American to win a pole position at Seekonk Speedway. In 1930, he took the checkered flag for the first of three consecutive victories at the track. During his time on the track, he set a record for the most consecutive wins, which still stands today.
One of the more recent big races at the track was the 2013 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championship, which was won by Jimmie Johnson. That was an incredible race, as Johnson beat out eventual runner-up Matt Kenseth by only three points. Johnson became the first NASCAR driver to win back-to-back championships in consecutive years, and he also recorded his first ever Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Grand Slam. Since then, the track has been in the news a lot, as it was site of one of the more controversial decisions in recent history. On August 31, 2017, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court overturned a ruling that would have allowed a convicted murderer named Donald Jeffries to be executed. The court decision halted Jeffries’ scheduled beheading on September 12, 2017, and it was appealed all the way up to the US Supreme Court.
An Inside Look At The Track
To give you an idea of how special of a racetrack Seekonk Speedway is, let’s take a quick look at some of the amazing things that can be seen from the vantage point of the grandstands. When you purchase a general admission standing ticket for the Indy 500, you get to enjoy all of this!
First of all, there is an amazing view of the racetrack from all three stands. If you sit in the infield section of the grandstands, you can see the track from all sides, as well as get a great look at all the cars. Even from the back row, you can still see the entire track, which is 11/10ths of a mile long. There is also a lot of action going on in the paddock, as the horses and drivers make their final preparations for the big race. If you look to your right after exiting the grandstands, you will see the starting line, which is an open area where the race cars are lined up prior to the race. It is a historic landmark, as this is where the starter gives the signal to start the race!
From the grandstands, you can also see the famous checkered flag that signifies the end of the race. As you might imagine, this is a pretty big deal, as the winners of the race take home the famous green flag. Since its inception, the flag has been known for being a little bit quirky. After World War II, a group of women from Boston was helping to raise money for the American Red Cross, and they decided to donate a set of wooden kitchen flags. These were supposed to represent their hospitality, and the hospitality of their kitchen islands. So, each flag was made with a different pattern of four trees, which represented the four seasons. The one red flag represented fall, the one white flag represented winter, the one yellow flag represented summer, and the one blue flag represented spring. Unfortunately, these flags were never really accepted, and so they stayed in a box in the attic of one of the members of the Red Cross. In 2011, the American Red Cross decided to allow these historic wooden flags to be seen again, and so they were taken out of their box and put on public display for the very first time in over 70 years! This year’s Indy 500 will mark the 100th running of the race, so it definitely deserves a spot on your calendar!
