You may know that the famous American car racer, Richard Petty, is regarded as the father of the “modern day” stock car. His team, known as the Petty Enterprises, is credited with introducing the NASCAR circuit, which is regularly staged nowadays at historic locations such as Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Daytona International Speedway. But did you know that the team’s headquarters is located in Selinsgrove, and that the squad runs a race every week at another location? This, however, is not a conventional cup race, as it is held at a purpose-built race track called the Selinsgrove Speedway?
The answer is that Selinsgrove is indeed big – really big. In fact, the facility is the largest motorsport complex of its kind in existence, capable of hosting a stadium-sized crowd and attracting some of the biggest names in the sport. What is more, it regularly stages events that are recognized as the Super Bowl of motorsport racing!
If you’re thinking about visiting this year, then here’s a quick guide that will help you get the most from your trip. Of course, if you’re a car nut like us, then you’ll want to make sure that you hit the track. It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the American stock car, and the fact that we’re able to have our own stock car in England because of NASCAR is pretty cool! Let’s take a look at what is available to do in and around the town.
What To Do In Selinsgrove
As previously mentioned, Selinsgrove is a pretty big place, and there is plenty to see and do in the area. One of the best things you can do is to take a walk down memory lane with the aim of catching a glimpse of a bygone era; a walk that will bring you to one of the most significant events in the town’s history – the annual General Motors Heritage Day. This event celebrates the very first Chevrolet automobile produced in the United States in 1911. It is held at the end of July, and is one of the biggest annual festivals in the region, with many famous faces turning out to be a part of it. Be sure to go early in the morning so that you don’t miss a thing!
To get a sense of how big Selinsgrove is and what it has to offer, visit the website for the Selinsgrove Speedway. There, you’ll find all the information you need about the facility and the teams that operate there. You can browse through the site and look at past events, view season schedules, and make reservations. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can even watch live video streams of the weekly stock car races!
Where To Eat And Stay In Selinsgrove
Nowadays, Selinsgrove doesn’t exactly offer the kind of luxury that one would expect from a town of its size. In fact, the only “top-star” hotel that is located there is the Ramada Plaza. Otherwise, there isn’t exactly a Four Seasons and there isn’t any Waldorf Astoria either. That’s kind of a bummer, but there are still plenty of great places to eat and stay in Selinsgrove. For example, there’s the Days Inn Express, which is a little pricier than average but offers high-quality rooms and serves a generous breakfast buffet.
Attend A Concert
If you’re in town on a Sunday, you have the option of going to see some live music. The place to be is the Spoleto USA Pavilion, which is located just across from the historic Selinsgrove Train Station. This grand space features live music and entertainment, and has a capacity of up to 2,000 people. On a balmy summer’s evening, it’s the perfect place to be, with the atmosphere being more reminiscent of a small town carnival than a conventional concert venue.
Visit A Museum
One of the town’s biggest draws is the Russell Industrial Museum. This fascinating collection of vintage cars and motorized vehicles displays the evolution of motorized transport in the 20th century. It also houses many excellent pieces of military hardware, including a B-25 bomber and a P-51 Mustang. In addition, the museum sponsors regular art exhibitions and has a gift shop that sells vintage goods.
Ride A Bike More Than Once
If you’re a fan of two-wheeled mode of transport, then you can treat yourself by renting a bike and making a leisurely tour of the town. There are several places where you can rent bikes, including the Selinsgrove Steam Train, which also offers scenic trips along the nearby Manatawny Creek. Don’t forget to wear a helmet though; motorbikes are prone to accidents, especially when they’re being ridden carelessly.
Enjoy A Play Or A Comedy Show
This being said, there are still plenty of places for you to indulge yourself, including the Cameo Cinema, which is located within the Ramada Plaza, and the Savoy Cinema, which is nearby at the Junction Mall. These cinemas offer the most modern films with the latest releases, along with classic films and festivals. You could also visit one of the small theatres in town, which often feature comedies and other light-hearted fare. If you like a play, then you can always attend one of the town’s annual drama festivals, which feature superb performances from local amateur groups.
Now, it’s time for you to hit the books and gather as much information as you can regarding the location. If you have any other tips or suggestions, then please feel free to share them in the comments section below. We’d love to hear from you!
