Last week, I spent a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon shopping at the local Speedway store. Their in-house café had just served its warm afternoon teardrop tray of pastries, so I figured it was a good time to make my purchase before the rush.
I browsed the aisles slowly, deliberately, pausing at each shelf to examine the contents and consider my options. The sweet spot in the store was the confectionary aisle, and I found myself drawn to the silvery trays of chocolate, the golden nuggets of caramel and the gooey sheets of brownie.
I studied the aisles and mulled over my options. At the very end, I noticed a wide selection of chocolaty delights and decided to pull the trigger on a smallish tray. As I took my first bite, I was a little let down. The chocolate was flat. I looked at the price tag and decided to return it the next day.
I was in the right place at the right time. While I was waiting, a member of staff came by to ask if I was having a good time. When I told her I was looking for a chocolate bar, she pointed me in the right direction. When I got back to the confectionary aisle, the tray was still there. The bar I had tried was on special. It was half price if you used a Speedway voucher.
It was at that moment I knew exactly what I was going to get. I picked up the chocolate bar, paid for it and headed to the till. When the cashier asked if I wanted rewards, I said, “Yes please” and pulled out my voucher. She smiled and rang up my purchase. A few seconds later, I felt a little ping in my wallet. It was my first taste of a full Snickers bar voucher. I felt like a child on Christmas morning.
I visited Speedway a few times after that, always planning my visit around a voucher. After a while, I started noticing more options for rewards. There were dairy snacks, ready-to-eat brunch items, fresh bread and even a beer and cocktail fridges in the store. It seemed like there was something for everyone. And the best thing was, I didn’t have to leave the store to use these offers. They were all available at the till.
What is it about a chocolate bar that makes one person want to eat it and another want to give it as a present? A Snickers Bar is an easy-to-wrap-up present, and it’s always a popular choice with recipients. A drink voucher will never go out of fashion.
The options for rewards at Speedway are endless. It might be a good idea to make a list of the different types of products you regularly buy, along with their corresponding voucher codes. If you’re still looking for gift ideas after that, your list of suspects will be much, much shorter.
