The American Motorcycle Association (AMA) is the governing body for motorcycling in North America. Every year, it holds an All-American race at the end of August called the Grand National Road Race. Each region of the country organizes its own race, and it’s the largest one-day motorcycling event in the world.
The Grand National is the culmination of all the regional events, and it draws thousands of motorcyclists from all over the country to one spot. You’d think that such an important race would have been graced with television coverage, but even though there’s been live broadcasting of the Grand National since its inception in the 1960s, it hasn’t really been given the attention it deserves.
If you’re a motorcyclist or just enjoy watching top-notch racing, then you have two options for this year’s Grand National. You can either watch the whole thing live, or you can catch up on the action via the internet. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how far it is from GSO to Martinsville Speedway, the two locations where the Grand National will be held this year.
Why Are We In North Carolina?
The 2019 Grand National is set to be held in North Carolina, and it will mark the first time that the All-American race has been held outside of the Mid-West since its inception. The decision was made in 2017, when the Southern section of the country experienced a brutal hurricane season. It turned out to be a very good thing for North Carolina, as the state was able to host the Super Bowl in February of that year, and the NBA All-Star Game in January.
The state is also the home to the NASCAR Cup, and a number of top-notch motorsports venues, including the famous Bowman Gray Stadium and the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The city of Raleigh is even home to a casino, which will no doubt attract many sports fans.
The state has a rich history in motorsports, and it goes back as far as 1951, when it became the first state to hold a motorcycle Grand Prix. Since then, the North Carolina Motorcycle Association (NCMA) has held five more motorcycle Grand Prixs, with the most recent one being the Adventure Race, which was won by Cameron Donald.
How Far Is It From GSO To Martinsville?
If you want to travel by car, then the easiest way to get to Martinsville would be to take US-29 westbound out of Raleigh. The road will officially become a part of the Grand National route, and it will take you directly there.
The distance from GSO to Martinsville is actually 269 miles. It will take you about four and a half hours to travel that far if you don’t stop anywhere. US-29 is a four-lane highway all the way, and it is classified as a part of the National Highway System. While there are no gas stations along the route, there are plenty of places to get a snack or a full meal. You’ll pass through the towns of Pinehurst and Southport before reaching your destination. If you’re in an RV or a bus, then you can camp out along the way – but there are no official campgrounds.
If you don’t have a lot of time and you want to save some gas, then you can take the back roads to get to Martinsville. It’ll be a longer route, but it will be a lot more scenic. Here’s a link to the US-29 route:
- Gainesville (Georgia) to Durham (North Carolina)
- Durham (North Carolina) to Wake Forest (North Carolina)
- Wake Forest (North Carolina) to Raleigh (North Carolina)
- Raleigh (North Carolina) to Martinsville (North Carolina)
The distance from GSO to Raleigh is actually 288 miles, and it takes you about five hours to travel there. Just beyond Raleigh is the country music town of Lynchburg. There are no services or gas stations there, so you’ll want to pull off on the side of the road if you need to rest or refuel. You’ll also have to contend with occasional traffic jams, but aside from that the road will be relatively smooth. If you don’t mind a slight detour, then you can bypass Raleigh and go straight to Lynchburg – but why would you want to do that?
The city of Martinsville is located in the center of the state. It is an important commercial hub, with a population of just over 10,000. This will be the first time that the Grand National has visited Martinsville, as it was previously located in the Southern region of the country. The city holds a special place in the history of motorcycling, as it was here that Harley Davidson began its road to worldwide acclaim. In 1919, the company began manufacturing motorcycles and shipped them directly to dealers and customers around the country. The same year, the Vanderbilt family – which owned a number of car, rail, and sea vessels – purchased a controlling interest in the company. The next year they renamed it the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company.
In 1921, the company opened a new factory, and it quickly became one of the largest employers in the city. In 1935, it introduced the flathead V8 engine, and a year later it introduced the iconic V-shaped Harley Davidson emblem. The same year, the Harley-Davidson Museum opened its doors to the public, and it’s one of the city’s most popular attractions. The museum contains many valuable historical pieces, and it’s worth a visit even if you’re not particularly a fan of motorcycles. If you’re coming from out of state, then you’ll have no trouble finding a place to stay in Martinsville. The city’s airport has direct connections to several major cities.
The Grand National: What Is It?
When the organizers of the American Motorcyclist Association decided that the best way to celebrate the sport in its 50th year was to host one massive race, they chose the Grand National. The race is made up of a number of smaller races, including the famous Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500, the Kentucky Derby, and the Grand Prix. The idea is to create one massive cross-country competition where the best individual racers from each region of the country can shine on the biggest stage yet (for motorcycle racing, anyway).
This year’s Grand National will be held at the end of August. It will start in Gainesville, Georgia and end in Martinsville. There will be 16 total races, including the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500, which will serve as the opening and closing ceremonies. They are also known as the Triple Crown races. Each region of the country will send a team of motorcycle racers to the competition, which means there will be 32 individual riders competing in front of the home crowd at the Grand National. It will be the ultimate test of both man and machine.
The American Motorcyclist Association also holds an annual all-women’s race, which this year will be held in conjunction with the Men’s Grand National. It’s fitting that the two biggest events in the country hold an all-female race and an all-male race. Although it will be the smaller event, the Women’s Grand National is made up of the top women riders across the country. This is a great way for the women to showcase their talents and to have some fun while competing against the best in the country. It will be held on August 31st in conjunction with the men’s event, and it will start in Durham and end in Raleigh. The organizers of the Women’s Grand National hope that more and more women get involved in motorcycling. They say that there are currently more female motorcyclists than ever before, which is definitely true. According to the American Motorcyclist Association, there are currently 584,600 registered motorcyclists in the United States. That makes up 38.5% of the country’s population. Of those, 96.2% are male, and 3.8% are female. The number of female racers nearly matches the number of male racers, which is unheard of.
