Eldora Speedway is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, dirt races in the country. It is held annually in May and is part of the World-Class Modified Tour, which spans the country and Canada. The track itself is located near Akron, Ohio, and was originally built in the 1980s. It has gone through many face-lifts and renovations, becoming one of the world’s most respected dirt races. It is held on a Saturday night and can attract anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 spectators, depending on the year.
Piqua, Ohio, boasts a population of just over 20,000 people. While it is considered to be the primary city of the Miami Valley (a large metropolitan area that spans the entire state of Ohio), Piqua has a lot to offer anyone who visits or lives there. One of the city’s major attractions is its annual community Christmas Parade, which draws hundreds of people from all over the area. This year’s parade will be on Saturday, December 14th. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a festive community singing session in the street, where kids can join in with the adults! This will be a good opportunity for families to come together, celebrate Christmas, and enjoy some music. The parade is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Piqua City website.
The best way to reach Eldora Speedway is to fly into Akron/Canton airport. From there, it’s only a 30-minute drive to the track. There are also multiple daily flights from other cities, so you can be certain of fast and easy transport.
If you want to get to Piqua, you have two options. You can either take the Ohio Turnpike North to Interstate 71. From there, head east on 71 for about 30 miles and take Exit 44A to reach Piqua. You will see some small towns along the way, but other than a couple of gas stations, you will not find any services or attractions in the area.
The other option is to take Cleveland’s Metro North Railroad to the nearby Medina Station. From there, it’s a short walk to the corner of Ontario Street and Wood Road. Make a left onto Wood Road and keep going for about three-quarters of a mile. Turn left onto State Street and walk for about 200 yards. You will pass a small shopping mall on your right before reaching the entrance of Eldora Speedway on your left.
There is also a bus service that passes by every hour or so. Buses run from Medina to both Port Clinton and Stow and stop just a few blocks away from the entrance to Eldora. The last bus leaves at 11:45 p.m. on weekdays and 10:45 p.m. on weekends. You can contact the Medina Area Chamber of Commerce for more information about getting to and around Medina on public transportation.
Eldora Speedway’s surface has changed several times over the years. The original surface was dirt, which gradually gave way to asphalt. In the early 2000s, the track was resurfaced with concrete. But the most recent renovations have returned it to its original dirt format. This year’s event is set for May 14-15, and the track’s website says that the racing surface will be rolled out in time for the pre-race practice on Wednesday, May 14th. The track is open from 5 p.m. on Thursday until 11 p.m. on Friday and 11 p.m. on Saturday. The gates close at 11 p.m. on Sundays and other public holidays. For more information, visit the track’s website.
The grandstands at Eldora are among the largest in the country. There are 20,000 fixed seats and up to 40,000 standing or walking room seats. The track’s website states that the seating capacity is 80,000. It also says that the grandstands will be expanded to hold up to 100,000 this year.
The starting line for the World-Class Modified Tour is just outside the backstretch of the track. The grid for this year’s race will be made up of 30 to 35 cars, divided into two or three rows. The race begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, May 15th, and will go for approximately three hours. The winner’s circle is located at the back of the track, just past the last turn. A win here is considered prestigious, as it means you traveled the entire three-and-a-half-hour race without making a pit stop. The win stands for the overall championship of that year’s season.
What To Do In Piqua
The 2018 edition of the Piqua Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday, December 14th, at 10 a.m. sharp. The parade will start on Main Street, heading west, and will end at the intersection of Main and High streets. Those who are interested in attending can follow the parade from beginning to end or watch it live onstage at the Piqua High School Stadium. At the end of the parade, the festivities will turn onto Main Street for a couple of hours, with people and businesses lining the street to welcome the holiday season and celebrate Christmas.
The Piqua Community Christmas Tree Lottery will take place at the Piqua Christmas Tree Planting Festival, which will mark the end of the parade. This year’s lottery will give out 500 tickets, with each ticket being an entry into the drawing. The drawing will take place at 2 p.m. and will feature 25 tickets available. The public is invited to attend and help celebrate the Christmas season.
One of Piqua’s biggest attractions is the Huntington Winery, located just south of the city on State Route 612 in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood. The 120-acre facility was established in the early 1970s and was named after Shirley, Ohio-born American vintner Henry Huntington. Here, you can tour the vineyards, sample the wine, and eat some of the food that the winery produces. You can also stay in one of the five bed & breakfasts that the estate offers. For more information, visit the winery’s website.
In addition to the above-mentions, the Akron/Canton airport has a few perks that are worth mentioning. First of all, it’s relatively close to some of the biggest cities in the country, making it a hub for those traveling to or from the Midwest. Second, it has direct connections to a few other prominent airports, including Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh, making it easy for people to travel to and from work or school. Third, it’s a fairly new airport, so it has a lot of character and offers plenty of amenities.
However, the biggest perk here is that the airport has a rental car center that offers high-quality vehicles at affordable prices. You can easily find a car that fits your needs and go anywhere you want without worrying about public transportation or missing your flight. The rental car center also provides transportation to and from the airport, so if you’re planning on traveling to or from Akron/Canton, this would be a good option.
Where To Eat
There are multiple restaurants and eateries in and around the Miami Valley, making it quite a diverse area when it comes to food options. A few of the best are:
- Jack’s Bar-B-Que
- Laughing Planet
- Honey’s BBQ
- Green Turtle Gourmet Café
- Penny’s Place
Many of these joints specialize in barbecue and offer some of the best slow roast pigs you’ll ever put in your mouth. Jack’s Bar-B-Que is commonly regarded as the king of the barbecue restaurants in the area and has been serving its customers for decades. Others, such as Honey’s BBQ and Green Turtle Gourmet Café, are newer entrants into the barbecue market who offer a unique take on the genre.
There is also a large selection of steakhouses in the Miami Valley, serving fresh seafood and beef. Though traditionalists may not love change, it’s pretty undeniable that the barbecue scene has improved drastically over the past decade, with many restaurants pushing the envelope of creativity, trying new things, and putting a spin on classic ingredients.
