The Las Vegas Speedway is one of the world’s most unusual sports venues. Its unusual design and unpredictable weather make it a challenging place to compete. The surface is abrasive and the track has no visible braking zones. One of the strangest sports arenas you’ll ever see!

Unlike other standard oval tracks, the Las Vegas Speedway is actually an octagon. The track is only 1.9 miles long (3 kilometers) with a seating capacity of around 70,000. It was first built in 1968 and has been owned and operated by the same family ever since. It was actually a re-creation of the historic and deadly Indy 500-style race tracks of the 1930s and 40s. Why did they do this? To pay homage to those greats and recreate the excitement of those days!

You might be wondering if the weather actually gets any worse than it currently is in Vegas, what conditions are the track actually in? We were fortunate enough to talk to Frank Pascarella, Director of the Las Vegas Speedway, about the track and its infamous surface. He also gave us an idea of what it’s like to race there.

The Octagon

The Las Vegas Speedway is an eight-sided sports arena located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is an unusual sporting venue in many ways. To begin with, the track itself is actually an octagon, measuring 758 feet (or 22.7 meters) long by 758 feet (22.7 meters) wide. Since it is a right-hand drive country, the track also has an inside wall, making it a bit more of an oval. This was done to make it more aesthetically appealing and easier for fans to view. There are also 70,000 permanent seats at the track, with the possibility of adding more. This high attendance rate is thanks in large part to Vegas’ warm climate and family-friendly entertainment scene. The track also has a reputation for hosting some of the world’s best motorsport events, which draw in huge crowds. This is due mostly to the fact that the track is relatively flat and has high rates of speed. This means that any car, even the most powerful ones, have to work hard just to keep their place on the track. This leads to some spectacular crashes that often leave the cars involved needing extensive repairs. If you’ve ever seen an Indy car race or an F1 Grand Prix, you’ll understand what we mean. How Is The Track Surfaced?

The track itself is in excellent condition considering its age, with only minor abrasions on the surface thanks to a resurfacing job in the early 2000s. The original surface is still present and is made out of tarmac with small strips of concrete forming the run-off areas at each corner. This was done to make the surface as smooth and fast-flowing as possible. As a testament to its speed, the asphalt was actually modified with potassium sorbate at some point in the past. The entire outer wall is concreted over, with the only openings being the entrances and exits. This was done in order to protect the track from the elements and make it as weatherproof as possible. Unfortunately, the wall means that the spectators on the outside cannot truly see the actions going on inside the track, so it makes for an odd juxtaposition of being both close and yet somewhat removed from the action. This is one of the reasons why the Las Vegas Speedway is such a unique and memorable venue. The spectators cannot help but be drawn to the action, even if they cannot see it.

Frank Pascarella

As previously stated, the Las Vegas Speedway is owned and operated by the same family since its opening in 1968. One of the members of this family, Frank Pascarella, is the Director of the center and one of the greatest experts in the field of motorsport. He has been involved in motorsport for most of his life and has devoted a large portion of his professional career to studying and understanding how speed can be achieved with a high degree of safety. To that end, the Las Vegas Speedway is widely considered to be one of the most brilliant creations in the history of motorsport.

Pascarella’s father, Jack, was the head track builder for the Indianapolis 500 from 1931 to 1965. It is no coincidence that the younger Pascarella spent so much time and effort in studying and re-creating these tracks as an expression of his appreciation for what his father built.

Weather And Climate

The Las Vegas Speedway is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is one of the most prominent sports venues in the area, as well as the entire state. The climate in Vegas is defined as subtropical, with warm to hot temperatures and very little precipitation. This makes it a great place to be during the summertime, with evenings commonly drawing in temperatures in the mid-80s (or high 70s) Fahrenheit (or low 30s Celsius). Since the Las Vegas Speedway is a closed track, the ambient temperatures inside the venue can rise as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit (or 6 degrees Celsius) above the outside temperature. Unsurprisingly, given its location and climate, many of the cars which are driven at the Las Vegas Speedway are of a normally European design, since it was originally built in the United Kingdom. Many of the vehicles which are used at this center are also imported from Europe, particularly Great Britain. This is mainly due to the fact that it was built there in the first place and so much work has gone into making it as authentic as possible. A good portion of the cars used at the center have now lost their original paint jobs, with the majority of them being either red, white, or blue. This is because these are the three primary colors of the British flag.

Safety And Security

In the interest of public safety, the Las Vegas Speedway is equipped with several safety devices. These include catch fences, water-spray machines, and concussion sensors. The track itself is a single lane, with traffic moving at an average speed of over 60 miles per hour (or 97 kilometers per hour). This makes it one of the fastest sports venues in the world. Since cars are frequently involved in spectacular collisions, the arena has also adopted a “safety first” approach to safety. Before each event, drivers are required to go through a brief safety briefing, during which they are reminded of the track’s safety features. The Las Vegas Speedway also uses a sophisticated marshal program, which is responsible for ensuring that all drivers and vehicles follow the regulations concerning conduct at the track. This includes using safety equipment and obeying all traffic laws. The marshals also have the authority to fine offending drivers or teams. Any form of cheating or illegal driving will not be tolerated at the track and the offenders will be dealt with accordingly. This includes the confiscation of vehicles or other safety equipment. In addition to this, the Las Vegas Speedway has an extremely tight security protocol. Armed security guards patrol the premises and stop fans, journalists, and other onlookers from entering the track unless they are authorized personnel. This is to ensure that everyone follows the rules and stays safe. It’s important to note here that the guards are only present to keep an eye on things and not to interfere. They also act as a deterrent in cases of illegal activity, such as car stacking or driver collusion. This is a common problem at many tracks and it’s something which the Las Vegas Speedway is determined to keep out. The track itself is also equipped with several CCTV cameras, which are monitored by the security staff. Although the images from these cameras are not regularly published, they do serve as a record for the authorities and a means of publicizing serious breaches of track regulations.
