The team at GasLogGear.com set out to discover how much fuel is needed by a race car driver, so they could make sure that they had enough when they got to the track. They tested this by weighing empty fuel cans and comparing their weight to that of a full one, finding that a can weighs in at 5.6 ounces more when full. This can be explained by the fact that a can is easier to balance on an engine block than in the air, so there’s more surface area for the molecules to bind to. These molecules can be considered fuel molecules, even though they don’t burn in the same way that gasoline does.

If you’re planning on taking your vehicle on a cross-country trip or going up a hill that you know isn’t close to a gas station, it’s important to find out how much fuel your car can handle. Fortunately, there’s a formula you can use to figure out the amount of fuel your car needs. Simply take the number of miles you’ll be driving and times by how often you’ll be pulling over to let the engine cool down. The number you get then is the amount of fuel you need for that particular trip.
Let’s say you’ve driven 5,000 miles and will be stopping at every other gas station for 20 minutes. You’d need four gallons of gas to get you from California to New York. This is assuming that you’re using premium fuel and are driving at an average pace of 50 miles per hour. If you were going a bit faster, you might need less fuel.
