The “Spirits of Spylink” event has arrived once again! The speedway races are back and they’re bigger and better than ever before. Once you’ve collected all of the golden rings, it’s time for the final stretch of the races. The last lap is a mad dash for the championship as you try to beat the clock and cross the finish line first. It’s time for one more hurrah!
Unfortunately, there’s no reset button for these races. You won them all when you finished collecting the golden rings. You’re going to have to make the most of what you’ve got and hope for the best. To put it simply, this event is extremely difficult to win. That’s probably why it’s always such a popular event. It’s a race fans can really get into.
The Basics
As with all WipEout games on PlayStation, gathering rings is the name of the game. You do this by destroying moving platforms and environmental objects that are scattered around the track. The number of rings you collect is the score you’ll use to determine your finishing position. The further you go, the more obstacles you’ll encounter. Therefore, be careful and don’t get distracted. This is a crucial point in the game as you could stumble and lose a life.
Timing Is Everything
There are four different time trial modes in the game. You’ll have to learn how to use them effectively if you want to win. The first is the standard mode where you have to cross the line ahead of the clock. The second is called “Rush” mode and requires you to cross the line as soon as possible in order to beat the clock. The third is “Expert” mode and has all of the same requirements as the second one except that it has less predictable obstacles and weapons. The fourth one is “Hazardous” mode and requires you to cross the line while avoiding as many obstacles as possible. These modes vary from easy to hard and are clearly indicated by the intensity of the background music.
Power Moves
Aside from gathering rings, you’ll have to also acquire power-ups. These are small objects that can be collected along the way. Some of them are useful while others can be extremely helpful. The timing for collecting these is critical as you don’t want to waste any time just spinning your wheels. The game will display a radar that will help you locate all of the power-ups that are hidden around the track. When you do find one, tap on it to acquire it. Make sure to check out all of the objects and platforms along the track, especially the ones that are jutting out from the ground. These are the places where the power-ups are usually found. You can also look out for the yellow question marks that indicate the presence of a power-up.
Ring Catching
In addition to rings, you’ll also need to collect golden bells. These are the little golden rings that can be found on the track. Similar to the other rings, you’ll need to tap on them to acquire them. After you’ve collected a certain number of them, it’s time for a boss battle. Here, you’ll encounter big rings that have to be smashed in order to collect them. You’ll need to keep an eye out for these particularly large rings as you go down the last lap. The damage you cause will also be reflected in the number of rings you collect. The more damage you do, the more rings you’ll collect. However, hitting anything will not be good as all of the obstacles and platforms will disappear once you do. You’ll have to start over from the beginning if you do this. Keep your wits about you and don’t make any careless mistakes.
Ring Destroying
Apart from rings, you’ll also need to acquire blue switches. These are the small switches that can be found along the track. Similar to the other rings, you’ll need to tap on them in order to acquire them. Once you’ve collected the required amount, it’s time for a boss battle. Here, you’ll have to tap on the switches in the correct order. The location of the switches will be indicated by a radar at the bottom of the screen. You’ll also need to pay attention to the background music and the intensity of its tone will help determine how many rings you need to collect in order to reach the next phase.
Shields And Weapons
The game also includes various shields that can be used to protect you from the oncoming hazards. These include ninja shields, pirate shields, fighter jet shields, and many more. The cool thing about the shields is that when they’re fully assembled, they form a physical barrier between you and the oncoming obstacles. Make sure to collect all of the shields along with the power-ups. You’ll also need to keep an eye out for weapons. These are the armaments that you can use to attack your opponents. The most useful weapons in the game include the harpoon gun, rocket launcher, machine gun, and many more. Make sure to use these weapons strategically. The machine gun in particular can be very helpful in giving you the advantage in long range combat.
Retreat Or Attack?
When you’ve collected enough rings, it’s time for the last lap. Just like in real life, the last one to cross the line wins. If you want to win this game, it’s important to understand when to attack and when to retreat. Retreating is a viable option in this game. You don’t have to rush headlong into battle. Sometimes, it’s better to just pull back and regroup. There are times when retreating can be the best option. For example, if you’ve become overconfident and attacked a boss battle without taking into account the damage you’ve done already. In this case, you might as well just call it a day and go back home. You can try again later when you’ve had enough time to recover.
Try Everything
Just because you lost a race doesn’t mean that there aren’t any ways for you to win it back. You can go back and try again later, or you can take a peek at the golden ring menu and see if there are any other races that you might have missed. The cool thing about these golden rings is that they’re all repeatable races. As long as you return with enough time to complete them, you’ll be able to try again later. Just make sure to save your game beforehand so that you don’t lose any of the progress you’ve made. Similar to real life, sometimes the best strategy is simply to try again later after you’ve rested and refueled. Sometimes, a win is just a win.
That’s all there is to it! Although it might look like there’s no clear-cut pattern to winning these races, it really comes down to strategy and chance. You’ll need to learn how to use all of the various tools at your disposal effectively if you want to come out on top. Good luck!
