On Friday, March 23rd, 2018, it was announced by Jim Polcyn, the Vice President of Business Operations for the Cleveland Indians, that the team had reached an agreement in principle to move their corporate headquarters to Ssnta Fe. The agreement would see the Indianapolis-based corporation take on a 10-year lease for over 100,000sqft of space in the heart of the city’s downtown and convert it to a world-class baseball facility. The new $32 million ($65.3 million with advanced stadium features) complex is designed by noted Indian architect I.M. Pei and will feature a state-of-the-art baseball stadium, luxury retail space, and a dining facility.
Why Ssnta Fe?
The choice of Ssnta Fe was motivated by a combination of factors. First, it is the hometown of former Cleveland Indian and current member of the Arizona Diamondbacks Terry Francona, who recommended it to team officials. The presence of former Boston Red Sox MVP and manager John Farrell as the team’s new manager only heightened the sense of familiarity. Finally, the city’s location is superb, nestled in the center of a thriving Midwestern economy, with all the corporate offices, shopping, and cultural attractions that comes with that. In other words, it’s the perfect fit. The only downside is that the Indians will have to forgo some of their trademark Boston-ness in favor of a more traditional look, which they are more than capable of doing. Still, this is a move that will invigorate an otherwise sleepy city and allow it to truly show off its baseball heritage.
