Is Michigan A Super Speedway? [Answered!]

This winter’s racing season has been an incredible one so far. From the rich history that is the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 to the recent addition of street racing, the winter of 2019 has treated fans unbelievably well. If you’re looking to add more speedway action to your calendar this coming season, then look no further than Michigan.

One of the most exciting moments during the 2019 season came during the first weekend of the year. On Thursday, March 13, the season opener for the Can-Am League was held at the beautiful Michigan International Speedway. Between the cold weather and the incredible speedway, there were a lot of things to love about the opening weekend of racing in Michigan.

The History Of Miserable Motorcycle Traffic

The history of motorcycle racing in Michigan dates back to the early 1900s, when the state began holding races in the summer. The first official motorcycle race in the state took place on May 11, 1902, and was named the Michigan 300. For the first few decades, motorcycle racing in Michigan was primarily a seasonal sport, with most events taking place during the summer months. That changed in the 1950s, when the Detroit Athletic Club began hosting racing events year-round. This move proved to be a good one, as annual racing events were eventually established in February and the entire state became known as Motorcycle Alley.

Modernization Of The Sport

The early races in Michigan were extremely informal, with little or no infrastructure in place. The track wasn’t always fully surfaced, there were no pit crews, and the cars didn’t have any kind of safety equipment. These days, that all seems like a distant memory. There are now roof-to-ground fences, catch-fencing, trackside personnel, and safety equipment all around the track. The track and its drivers also take their safety very seriously, with each driver having a safety officer riding along with them during all events. This wouldn’t have been possible just a few decades ago.

The Newest Track

In 2019, the Michigan International Speedway located in Brooklyn was opened to the public. The 1.25-mile concrete jewel boasts a unique, banked yellow-ribbon oval design and an interesting history. The speedway opened in 1968 and has hosted some famous races over the years. For instance, the 1978 Grand Prix was the site of Mario Andretti’s famous win, while the 24 Hours of Daytona was also held there. In 2019, the Michigan International Speedway will host it’s first night race, the Can-Am League opener. This event is named Jimmy Spencer’s Dream and will honor the memory of Jimmy Spencer, founder and promoter of the Can-Am League. Spencer conceived the idea for the league in 1968 and it was initially established as a tri-county league. In 1975, the Can-Am League merged with another organization to form the United States Auto Club (USAC).

The Perfect Weather For Riding

If you love to ride your motorcycle, then Michigan is the place for you. The entire season here is fantastic, with the air being warm and balmy and the roads being covered in enough snow to make for some fantastic riding experiences. If you’re a casual motorcyclist who likes to cruise down the highway in comfort, then Michigan is the place to be. With some of the best weather in the country, there’s no reason not to live your life to the fullest.

The Racing Scene

The racing scene in Michigan is growing, with several new tracks popping up across the state. The state government has also made a big push to expand and improve existing facilities. The roads here tend to be very scenic, with plenty of tree-lined lanes and small towns along the way. The entire state is full of surprises and very accessible, meaning anyone can make the trip to a race track easily.

An Opportunity To Practice

Practice makes perfect, and since everything here is so well laid out, it’s easy to get some good quality practice in. Most tracks have a bit of everything, from slow corners to fast straights, so it’s quite the versatile practice facility. Along with having everything you could want in terms of the track, the infield also has all the usual amenities like hotels, gas stations, and restaurants. It’s a great place for those who want to get some racing in before the season ends.
