Is Speedway Indiana A Good Place To Live? [Updated!]

You Might Already Know

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you’ll know that we often write about topics that are relevant to our lives as expats in Indianapolis. We’ve got plenty of stories about the weird and wonderful things that occur here, and we thought it might be fun to pull together a round-up of some of the things we’ve found out so far.

The Attractiveness Of The Place

One of the first things that anyone planning a move to or from Indiana will certainly want to consider is the attractiveness of the place in comparison to other locations. After all, if you’ve got a limited amount of money to spend on moving expenses, you might want to prioritize those locations where you think you’ll find it easiest to make new connections. With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at some of the stats that define this wonderful state.

Mining And Metal Industries

Indiana is definitely a place to go if you’re a fan of gold and silver. As you might imagine, with such a large population of mining enthusiasts, this is the area where you’ll find a huge range of job opportunities. From mining itself to refining, there are definitely roles available for everyone. With the ongoing popularity of the hobby, it’s likely that there will be plenty of job opportunities available even when the economy recovers. Whether you’re a gold bug or a silver maniac, you’ll certainly find somewhere in Indiana to make your fortune.

As For The Economy

It’s fair to say that the last few years have not been kind to the economy of Indiana. Like so many other areas of the country, the pandemic really hammered home the fact that money doesn’t exist in sufficient amounts for everyone. While there are still some really great pockets of economic activity in the state, the overall picture is rather bleak. Those looking for work in the mining and metal industries will certainly find that times are difficult and there are a lot of people looking for jobs. The combination of these two factors makes for an interesting environment for anyone looking for a new home.

As we’ve established, Indiana is a place that is rich in resources, and that also has a rather bleak economic outlook. Naturally, with the climate being so harsh, those moving to Indiana might want to consider the local climate and what it’s like to live here. While the winters aren’t cold enough to injure anyone, they can certainly be harsh and damp enough to make you glad to be indoors during the day. The summers are a different story, as they can be extremely hot and humid which, in turn, makes for a rather unpleasant time of the year. Since we already established that Indiana is rather poor in economic terms, it might not be the best place to be in summer. This is especially relevant for those moving to Indiana who are unable to adjust to the climate and don’t have the money to buy air con or a/c.

If you’re looking for a safe place to live, it’s essential to consider the level of crime in the area. In a place like Indiana, with such a large amount of industrial activity, it’s not surprising that there’s a lot of crime associated with the mining industry. Since much of the economy here is based on manufacturing, it’s not surprising that you’ll find a lot of illegal activity associated with that too. From rustlers stealing cattle to drug and alcohol smuggling, illegal mining and metal dealing is rife in Indiana. While you might get your share of nasty surprises, it’s still a place where you’ll feel extremely safe.

In Conclusion

As we’ve established, Indiana isn’t the most attractive place to live. As a state, it’s rather bland and somewhat dull. However, all of that really is a complete fallacy. Beneath the seemingly boring exterior, there’s a beautiful human spirit here that simply needs to be unlocked. With that in mind, it’s time to get out there and spread some sunshine!
