Speedway, also known as Short Track Racing, is a form of auto racing in which vehicles compete on a short, enclosed course. The sport originated in the United Kingdom in the 1800s and was later developed in North America. It continues to be popular today mainly due to the fact that it is a great spectator sport and can be highly competitive. Since most short tracks are located in rural areas, the sport offers participants a great way to connect with nature while also being a part of something exciting!
The 2019 Season
Thanks to the wonders of Google, we can easily find the schedule for the upcoming season of Speedway. The season begins on March 26 and runs through October 17. Like most sports, there are several highlights that the fans should look out for.
The Famous Griggs Corner
Located in Bristol, England, the speedway track there is called Filton and was originally established in 1897. It is named after William Griggs, who was famous for his exceptionally tall oak tree that stood in the center of the track for many years. The tree was eventually removed during a track renovation in 1934. Despite the fact that cricket is a more popular sport in England, nothing can beat the atmosphere at a Somerset County Cricket ground when the lights are switched on at night and the clock is ticking down to the start of a county cricket match.
The American Revolution
The first officially recognized speedway race was held in North America in 1911, and the sport grew quickly throughout the United States and Canada. It’s important to note that the sport began to decline in popularity in the latter half of the 20th century as a result of various factors. While some tracks still exist, it’s mainly been relegated to smaller towns and rural areas. One of the main reasons for this was the introduction of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s. The construction of these roads significantly altered the landscape of the American countryside, which led to fewer and lessor attractions, including speedway tracks. In recent years, however, the sport has seen a revival in popularity mainly as a result of the support from various governing bodies, including the Fédération Internationale de Sauveteauphile (FISA).
