What Fits Inside Indianapolis Motor Speedway? [Facts!]

With the Indianapolis 500 less than a month away, the anticipation is building for this year’s race. But what exactly does it mean to ‘fit’ inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? And what’s the biggest thing you’ll need to bring with you?

The Track & The Stands

First off, it should go without saying that you will not be allowed to bring any outside food or drink into the venue. You’ll also need to check the rules before the race to make sure you don’t break any other regulations. As you may imagine, the security team is out in full force to keep an eye on things. So it’s best to keep your cool and stick to the essentials – your suit, helmet, and gloves. In addition, you will not be able to store any bulky items in your car, as it will be searched prior to being allowed on the track. Lastly, you will not be able to wear anything with logos on it as these will be against the rules as well.

The Podium

On the subject of your car, you’ll need to specify what type you’ll be bringing. You can choose from the following options:

  • A racing suit
  • Tracksuit
  • Cyclist
  • Motorcycle
  • Ski suit

If you’re driving a car, you’ll also need to ensure it is road-worthy. One of the officials will inspect it before the start of the race and give you a pass or fail. If it passes, great! Otherwise, you’ll have to start from the very back of the grid.

Brake Shoes

For the full 500-mile experience, you’ll need the proper shoes for the occasion. These are known as ‘brakes’ and come in many different styles and colors. You’ll also want to consider what type of surface you’ll be racing on. For example, if it’s dirt, you’ll want to wear boots; if it’s asphalt, you may want to wear shoes. The officials will give you instructions about what type of shoes to bring based on the track conditions. You will not be able to wear tennis shoes or open-toed shoes, as these are against the rules as well.

The Overall Appearance

Last but not least, we come to the part of the list concerning your general appearance. For this, you will want to prepare yourself for the occasion by getting your hair and beard trimmed. Beards are allowed, but must be kept neat and clean. You will not be able to wear wigs, false nails, or heavy makeup. You will also not be allowed to play music, talk, or eat while driving.

The rules for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are in place for the safety of everyone involved. The drivers must concentrate on driving their cars carefully and courteously, while the spectators enjoy the show from the safe confines of their seats. Hopefully, these tips will help you prepare for the biggest race of the year. We look forward to seeing you there!
