Last weekend saw the return of the Texas Motor Speedway after a four-year hiatus. The speedway was established in 1968 and was the inspiration for the famous track from Need for Speed. Prior to the race, multiple world-class athletes were spotted at the track. Here’s a recap of the weekend’s events.
Wakeboarding Returns
One of the first major events was the wakeboarding competition. This year’s event drew a massive crowd and featured some incredible athletes, including Ricky Taylor, who became a two-time world champion. Taylor is one of the favorites to win the gold at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Taylor had this to say about his experience at the speedway:
“It feels great to be back and competing at such an incredible track. This is a combination of the best of both worlds—my sport and the speedway. It was such a privilege to be a part of this event and I hope to return soon.”
Another great wakeboarder who also competed last weekend was Axel Souffront. This year’s edition of the Offshore World Cup also held at the speedway. Souffront is the first Frenchman to win the competition, and he’s won it once before. He also competed in the Omnium earlier this year, where he placed second.
X-Games
X-Games are the sports entertainment company that hosts a number of international games and competitions. This year, the organization turned 40 years old and celebrated the occasion with a huge gathering of fans. Last weekend was the culmination of the inaugural X-Games Mexico, which featured incredible athletes like Brian Anderson, who won gold in the Freeride slopestyle event; Carlos Checa, who became the first person to win back-to-back X-Games gold medals; and Xolo Marín, who took home the silver in the Big Air snowboard event. The event drew an estimated crowd of 40,000 people and aired live on the ESPN networks.
Motocross
Last but not least, we had the motorsport event that put NASCAR on the map. This year marked the 60th anniversary of the legendary California desert race, which is now known as the Motocross Classic. This is one of the most popular motorsport events, and it always draws a big crowd. We got to see legendary dirt bikes like the Honda Crossbow, the Yamaha Tractor, the Kawasaki W650, and the KTM 690 Adventure take to the dirt and thrills of the California desert. The weekend was a great showcase of American motorsport and kicked off the season 4 of the motocross grand prix. The pros said this about the experience:
“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life. This is the Mecca for motorcyclists. It’s amazing how many great bikes there are, and how many generations have been passing down their knowledge. It’s very cool to share this passion with such an incredible crowd.”
