You’ve probably heard of John Wayne, William Harrison, and Jackie Robinson, but probably don’t know much about them. Well, John Wayne graduated from high school in 1931, when he was 16 years old. He went on to become one of the most iconic movie stars of all time. William Harrison became one of the first African-American students to graduate from high school in Kentucky in 1939. Jackie Robinson, a pioneer of civil rights, famously sued Major League Baseball in 1947 over their restrictive color-blind policies that prevented him from becoming a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1951, he was finally allowed to play, but was originally suspended for the entire season. In 1956, he became the first African-American manager in MLB history.
These are just a few famous people who were born and raised in Speedway, Indiana. This small town is most famous for the Indianapolis 500, the biggest event in all of motorsport, but it’s also the high school that produced these famous alumni. Since the school’s first graduating class in 1915, over 4,000 students have graduated from there. In fact, this year’s crop of seniors has a chance to break the record for the most graduates in one year, which currently stands at 4,098.
The Overall Size Of The School
So how big is Speedway High School? This is a common question, and there isn’t a single clear-cut answer. Truth is, it depends on what you’re measuring. If you’re talking about the buildings or the land on which they stand, the school is actually massive. It covers a ton of rural farmland, extending far beyond the confines of the school’s campus.
But if you want to know how many students actually attend the school, the answer is a little more complicated. Because the population of Speedway is just under 10,000, the school’s enrollment is capped at around 400 students. That means not all students who attend the school will necessarily graduate. The school’s main gym is named after a former headmaster, Dr. Henry W. Grady. The gym, which opened its doors in the early 1930s, has seen several renovations over the years. The most recent one was in 2015, when the school completed a renovation project that doubled the size of the gymnasium. This allowed for the construction of new basketball courts and added another layer of metal to the building. He has received numerous teaching awards for his efforts and continues to teach at the school today. His qualifications alone would make him a great candidate for a high-school teaching job. Unfortunately, it looks like Mr. Brown is in a small minority, as the school doesn’t really report data on the teacher’s qualifications. However, based on the demographics of the school’s graduates, it’s safe to assume that most of the teachers at the school have at least a Master’s Degree.
