On May 2nd, I got to attend the 103rd running of the legendary Atlanta Motor Speedway. I went with my dad, who has been a huge Atlanta fan for as long as I can remember. I have always been jealous of his experience at AMS. It is the one place that I always wanted to go to as a kid. Now that I’m older, I’m finally lucky enough to live my dream and attend an Atlanta Speedway race. It was incredible!
I highly recommend that you visit the site and take a look at the amenities they have to offer. You can’t make this stuff up. They have an incredible cafe that serves coffee and pastries all day long. They even have an awesome arcade and plenty of places to eat. The setup is really unique because it feels like a small town outside of Atlanta.
The thing that really struck me while I was there was how well-deserved the praise of Marvin Bush is. Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. On June 28th, 2019, George H.W. Bush will be buried at the Houston Cemetery in College Station, Texas. He will be eulogized by his son, former President George W. Bush. Then on October 31st, Bush will be buried alongside his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Robin. The late President George Bush will be buried in the same space as his father, grandfather, and uncles. He will finally be reunited with his beloved “Poppy.”
The line to meet the Bushes stretched for nearly two blocks. It wasn’t even noon yet, but there were already over 100 people in the waiting line. When the Bushes arrived, they were greeted by two separate standing ovations, one for each of the Bushes. After the final blessing, the whole family climbed into a black limousine and left. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The next day, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran an article with this iconic photo of the family waiting to leave. The story said that the Bush family was so overwhelmed by the love and support they received that they could barely contain their emotions.
There is no question that Marvin Bush will go down in history as one of the greatest track builders in the history of the sport. It’s an incredible feat that he was able to build such a unique track in such a short amount of time with the financial backing of a small league. The thing is, it all started with one man’s vision and his unwavering support from the beginning. He did everything from design the entire layout to picking out the track’s paint job. The list of famous people that have raced at Atlanta is long, and it continues to grow every year. It is safe to say that Marvin has put his mark on the sport forever.
What Seats Are Covered At Atlanta Motor Speedway?
The main grandstand at Amerifreight Arena has a capacity of 11,500 people and is one of the largest single-purpose stadiums in the world. The cost of construction is approximately $125 million and took over a year to complete. The end result is a magnificent feat of modern architecture. The first row of seating at Amerifreight Arena is covered and protected by a canopy. A grandstand like this one was only meant for a couple of NASCAR races at a time. They would bring in the luxury boxes, circle the track, and leave. When the drivers are making their circuit around the track, the entire grandstand is in the middle of a loud and vibrant atmosphere. This is no ordinary sporting arena; this is the home of the Pride of the Southland, the Atlanta Falcons.
The Track’s Architect
If you had to pick one person to thank for the existence of the Atlanta Motor Speedway, it would be Bobby Johns. He started as a bricklayer and worked his way up to become one of the most influential track designers in NASCAR. He began working with NASCAR around the turn of the century and helped develop the tri-oval track that is still used today. One of his last designs was Atlanta Motor Speedway. When it comes down to thanking someone for a priceless present, there is no better person to thank than Bobby Johns.
The arena at Amerifreight Arena is a spectacular and memorable structure. It was designed by Arseniy Budrevich and Vladimir Vyatinsky and is generally considered one of the most beautiful sports arenas in the world. Located in the middle of the city and overlooking the entire track, it is an incredible sight. Unfortunately, it was also a fairly expensive structure to build. Budrevich and Vyatinsky used concrete and steel, which together cost a reported $30 million. Thankfully, the design is timeless and will never go out of style. You cannot put a price on creativity and artistry.
When it comes to Amerifreight Arena, you can’t talk about the venue itself without mentioning the magnificent Atlanta Falcons. When the NFL was looking for a team to fill the void left by the Los Angeles Rams after their move to St. Louis, they could have gone anywhere in the U.S. to find a new franchise. They chose Atlanta, partly because of the city’s booming economy and large population, but also because of the magnificent stadium that was already under construction at the time.
The Falcons played their first game at the 50,000-seat stadium on September 18th, 1996. Since then, they have played all of their home games there. The team was originally owned by Ted Turner, who died in 2019 at the age of 88. Turner Broadcasting, the company that acquired the team, is valued at over $16 billion.
The Luxury Boxes
Many famous people made the pilgrimage to Marvin’s backyard to attend the 103rd running of the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The luxury boxes at Amerifreight Arena were sold out, and the demand for the remaining inventory was so great that the team had to put in a second order.
For those heading to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, rest assured that you will not go hungry. The restaurants and food trucks around the track will keep you well-fed and fueled for the entire duration. The teams and drivers spend time after their races taking a break from the racing action and relaxing at the track hotel’s BBQ pits. You will get a chance to sit down with them and get to know them a little better.
The whole experience of going to a NASCAR race is completely different from what you would get from just going to a regular sporting event. You will feel like you are in one of the most beautiful and historic sports arenas in the country and that every bit of it is dedicated to the love of motorsports. In one of the greatest speeches of all time, Richard Petty said: “There’s nothing like being at a real live racetrack and feeling the wind on your cheeks and smell that unique odour – of gasoline and oil – that makes a car driver feel right at home.” This is something that you can actually feel and smell when you are at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is an experience that will be etched in your mind for the rest of your life.
