What Town Is Michigan International Speedway In? [Ultimate Guide!]

We could not believe our eyes when we saw the 2017 Michigan International Speedway map. It looked just like those famous blueprints that town planners use to get all the buildings in their towns in the correct positions. Only in this case, everything was real! There were real houses, real streets, and even a few real stores. It was like something out of a movie!

Is this a dream come true for the NASCAR fans who live in or visit Michigan?

We headed to the local library and did some research. What we found out was pretty cool! Let’s take a look.

History Of The Place

Michigan International Speedway was established in 1968 and is located in the town of Shelby Township. As we mentioned above, the layout of the track is mostly on paper, but the buildings exist and are operational. If you’ve ever been to the nearby village of Speedway, you’ll understand why this is not a dream for the inhabitants. Most of the buildings were built in the 1950s and 1960s and the village was totally rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1968. Thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and the locals, the track hosts one of the biggest racing events of the year. Thanks to the track’s name, fans can actually visit the site and get an idea of what it feels like to race at a real-life version of the famous Daytona International Speedway, built in the same state!

Traveling To The Races

Although a lot of the track is situated in Michigan, getting to the stadium and back home is not easy for the attendees. To start with, getting there is pretty hard. The closest airport to the track is in Flint, about 75 miles away. The drive from the airport is about an hour, so you’ll arrive well after the scheduled starting time of the race. The best option is to rent a car, as there is no public transport to the site. Local taxi services charge hundreds, so it’s best to rent one instead.

Once you arrive, the next problem is getting around. The campus is huge, with many parking lots and it is easy to get confused as to where you should park. Luckily, the staff at the track site are available to help, offering directions and parking passes as you enter the grounds. They will also give you a tour of the track, explaining all the cool things about it. This is especially helpful for first-time visitors, as it feels a little overwhelming to try and figure everything out by yourself.

If you’re driving, getting to the track is not hard. Once you’re inside the gates, you’ll have to find the entrance to the lot where your car is parked. The only problem is that once you parked your car, you might not know where to go, as there are so many turns and winding corridors. If you get lost, just ask a patrol car or a security guard for help. They will direct you to the right place, but it’s best to follow the rules and use the designated parking spaces at all times.

Security At The Tracks

It is absolutely critical for the safety of the attendees and the crews working at the track that there is always security present and that the safety of everyone is a priority. This means that the parking lots must have security guards and patrols cars in them at all times. You’ll notice that there are actually police officers present and working at every speedway, from the local town police departments to the Kentucky State Police. This is not something that is only limited to Michigan either. This is the law everywhere.

The People Behind The Madness

If you want to find out more about the people behind the madness, check out the website of Michigan International Speedway. They have a whole section about the history of the site, its construction process, and the people who worked hard to make it a reality. One of the highlights is the fact that the fans who come to the races are mostly volunteers and locals, showing how much the community supports this amazing sport. This is evident from the massive number of people who show up every year and the long waiting lists for people who want to volunteer.

What To Do There

As we mentioned above, getting to the track is not easy. Once you’re there, the fun begins. You have the option to buy a bleacher ticket, which is what most people usually do. These are your basic seats, behind the fence, next to the track. You can get a peek at the cars from there, but you’ll have to be content with the noise and the pollution. There’s also a VIP section, behind the first couple of rows of seats. These are reserved for people who paid a lot of money for them and come from all over the world to see this race. You won’t get a decent view from these seats, but you’ll feel like a real VIP, once they bring you your hot dog and popcorn!

There are also restaurants and food trucks outside the stadiums, next to the parking lots. You can find all kinds of food there, from Italian to Mexican to American traditional dishes. There are also bars, located inside and outside the stadiums, offering a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. If you’ve ever been to a sporting event before, this is where you should be spending most of your time. The parking lot is full of tailgaters, chatting and doing whatever they want, while their kids play in the dirt. It really is a sight to see.

If you’re a true car fan and you love fast cars and racing, then the track is certainly the place to be. The locals are amazingly welcoming and it’s a great vibe to feel once you arrive. There are actually police officers driving around, in full uniform, stopping people to ask them what they’re doing there and directing them to the right place. It feels like a real community and that’s what makes it special. The people who work there really care about the fans and the attendees, making sure they have a good time and feeling safe. The best part is how the track organizers aim to please the fans with the construction of new events and improvements to existing ones. Even the smallest details are taken care of, like the garbage cans placed in the right spots, to keep the landscape clean and organized. They really want to make sure that everyone has a good time and that the races go off without a hitch. This is what you’d expect from a company or an organization that’s dedicated to their fans, for sure!

If you’ve never been to the speedway or to a NASCAR event before, it can be pretty overwhelming. You’ll need to find your way around and figure out where everything is located. Luckily, the people there are super nice and willing to help, directing you to the right place, should you get lost. Once you do find it, you’ll see a parking lot full of people, parked in rows, waiting for the green flag to wave them into action. You’re in for a real treat. It’s one of the best NASCAR venues around, thanks to the hard work of the volunteers and the locals who live and breathe motorsports.
