What’S Going On At The Daytona Speedway? [Updated!]

The Daytona International Speedway in Florida has been the epicenter of motorsport news lately as Formula One teams have been flocking there to take on one of the most iconic races of the year. And it’s not just F1 as other motorsport series have followed suit and pitched tents at the Daytona International Speedway too.

New F1 Camp

The most recent development at the Daytona International Speedway is the arrival of several Formula One teams in an attempt to better their odds of winning the 2019 Formula One World Championship. The most prominent of these teams is the newly crowned World Champion Mercedes, who arrived at Daytona with a strong squad headlined by F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. (The World Champion team arrived at the track in the beginning of February and have been sighted at the track regularly since, leading many to believe that they are preparing for the coming season.)

The new teams haven’t been idle though, as they’ve been hard at work fine-tuning their cars and doing some driver training too. This week the teams will get a taste of what life is like at the Speedway as they participate in a Rookie Camp for the drivers and staff. The Camp will give the teams a chance to get acquainted with the track and its drivers, and be integrated into some team activities. (Some of the activities will include some timed driver exercises, which is always beneficial for team building.)

Festival Mania

The 2019 edition of the Festival of Speed will see some of the biggest names in motorsport descend on the Daytona International Speedway in Florida during the first weekend of October. The four-day festival is one of the world’s premier motorsport exhibitions and draws thousands of fans to the track each year. (The 2019 Festival of Speed will be held between October 1 and 4.)

The 2019 edition of the Festival of Speed will be the 52nd annual edition of the Festival of Speed and will see some of the biggest names in motorsport descend on the track during the first weekend of October. (The 2019 edition of the Festival of Speed will be held between October 1 and 4.)

This year’s edition of the Festival of Speed will be headlined by the return of the American Motorcycle Grand Prix and the debut of the MotoGP Superbike World Championship. The Grand Prix will mark the first time that the AMA has held a race at the Speedway since 2007, and will allow fans to see some of the greatest bike racers in the world battle it out on a three-quarter mile main street in Daytona Beach. (The AMA Grand Prix will be held on Thursday, October 3.)

The Superbike World Championship will see top riders from around the world battle it out on Saturday, October 5, with the finale on Sunday, October 6. (The Superbike World Championship will be held on October 5-6.)

The 2019 edition of the Festival of Speed will also see the debut of several new sports and racing series, including the ELMS (The Electric Motorsport Series), which will run a full schedule of endurance events, as well as the Formula Historic Championship, which will see cars from the 1920s and 30s return to the fray. (The Electric Motorsport Series and Formula Historic Championship will both be held at the Speedway during the first weekend of October.)

Speedweeks

The 2019 winter sports season is just around the corner and many major motorsport series will be heading to the southern part of the country to do their thing. The NASCAR season will start in a couple of weeks and the speedway has already started laying down some of the basics for this year’s edition. (The annual Daytona International Speedweeks begin in a couple of weeks, and will be a 10-race series that will culminate in one of the biggest races of the year: the Daytona 500 on October 8.)

This year’s edition of the speedweeks will begin with a couple of tire tests on February 22 and 23, before the first official practice session takes place the next day. (The tire tests and the first practice session are free, while the other nine practice sessions and the Daytona 500 will be pay-per-view events.)

NASCAR Xfinity Series

The Daytona International Speedway hasn’t always been associated with motorsport, as it was previously home to the Nationwide Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. However, in 2019 the NASCAR Xfinity Series will make its debut at the track, and will share the track with several other motorsport series. (The NASCAR Xfinity Series will be the premiere NASCAR series at the track next year.)

The NASCAR Xfinity Series is one of three major NASCAR series and is the premier series of the three, consisting primarily of teams from the Southeast. The Xfinity Series will share the track with the ARCA Racing Series and the Daytona International Speedway Craftsman Truck Series during the speedweeks. (The ARCA Racing Series and the NASCAR Truck Series will also be doing some of their 2019 races at the track.)

The cars in the NASCAR Xfinity Series are quite different from those in the other two major NASCAR series. The Xfinity Series uses a universal setup which makes their cars more accessible to a wider audience, with each team having a representative of each letter in the alphabet – A, B, C, etc. Once the grid is set, the starting ceremony will see the National Anthem sung and the flag of the United States waved. (The start of each NASCAR Xfinity Series race will also be accompanied by a live band.)

The new NASCAR Xfinity Series team owners are clearly aware of the history of the sport at the track, as many have named their cars in an attempt to pay homage to some of the legendary vehicles which have raced there. (Some of the teams have even gone so far as to have ‘Patience’ inscribed on their cars.)

Daytona 24 Hours

The 24 Hours at the Daytona International Speedway is one of the oldest continuous motorsport events in the country and is the ultimate test of endurance for those participating in the race. NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series will return to the track for the 2019 season and will share the track with several other motorsport series. The NASCAR Cup Series is one of the most prestigious racing series in the country and is the premier series of the three NASCAR divisions. The cars in the NASCAR Cup Series are quite similar to those in the other major NASCAR series. The Cup Series uses a unique setup which is quite different from the other two major series, which uses a universal set up. (The unique setup of the Cup Series cars allows for more passing opportunities, while the other two series use a more strict drafting policy.)

The name ‘Cup’ is also referred to as the ‘Chase’, as it’s the format used to determine the World Champion of each series. (The Cup Series is officially known as the ‘Chase.’) The 2019 season of the NASCAR Cup Series will mark the 60th anniversary of the modern-day iteration of the series.
