Birth Of An Empire

As the ice cream market changed and grew, so did Seven Eleven. The company continued to grow rapidly, purchasing other ice cream makers like Arnold’s and Ben & Jerry’s. In 1960, the company’s headquarters were moved to a new, 30-story structure nicknamed the “Tower of Ice.” By the end of the decade, Seven Eleven had become the number-one food retailer in America, with over 300 locations.

Even as it became the dominant player in the ice cream industry, Seven Eleven continued to innovate. In the early 1960s, the company was the first to sell ice cream in its stores on a “warm” basis (not frozen solid). In 1962, it was also the first to offer free refills on its straws – which now, of course, come in many different varieties.
