Where Is Dover International Speedway Located? [Fact Checked!]

Dover International Speedway is a multi-purpose stadium located in Dover, Delaware. It is mainly used for football matches and is the home stadium for the local college teams Delaware State University and the University of Delaware. However, the venue is open to the public during non-match days and contains a 4,000-seat multi-purpose arena that is suitable for outdoor concerts.

The History Of The Stadium

The stadium is the product of a merger between the two existing sports venues in Dover. The first one was Delaware Stadium, which was built in 1939 and mostly used for college football and soccer games. The second one was Cape Cod Stadium, which was built in 1960 and also contains a swimming pool, track and field, and baseball fields. The two venues combined to form a football and track/field stadium that was opened in 1964. The same year, Dover International Speedway was established as the entity responsible for the operations of the stadium.

The Stadium Today

Despite its name, the stadium is not located in Dover International Airport. It is actually situated on the outskirts of the town and connects to it via a pedestrian underpass. The venue is surrounded by a parking lot that has a capacity of 800 vehicles, giving it one of the largest parking lots in the area. In addition, the stadium is adjacent to the Christiana Mall, which has more than 110 stores and restaurants, and the Dover Board of Trade, a business incubator.

The Stadium’s Location

The stadium is located in Dover, Delaware, between New York City and Baltimore. It is accessible via Interstate 95, the PAT (Patriot’s Point Area Tunnel), and Route 13.

Situated along the New Jersey coast, Philadelphia is about a three-hour drive from Delaware. However, fans coming from Philadelphia need to reach Maryland before heading to the stadium. The location is also close to the Virginia border, which is a short drive from Roanoke.

Soccer In The United States

The United States is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a professional soccer league. College soccer is popular in the country however, and the men’s NCAA college soccer championship is the premier event each year. The most recent edition of the championship was won by the University of North Carolina, who beat out defending champion Ohio State in the final. In 2016, the United States men’s national soccer team qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1990, when they were eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual champions Mexico.

Music Venues In North America

The concert hall at the stadium can host various types of music events, including classical music concerts, Broadway shows, and major sporting events. It has a maximum capacity of 4,000 people and was originally built for concerts and trade shows. The venue is also equipped with an audio-visual system that can project images and videos on the big screen, as well as lights and drapes that can be used to create an atmosphere similar to a Broadway show or an NBA game.

International Racing Venues

Dover International Speedway is also the name of a race track in London, Ontario that is owned by the same company that owns the Delaware facility. The track was originally constructed in 1929 and was known as Maple Leaf Stadium at the time. It was renamed after Canadian motorist and business magnate Samuel G. Adams, who had a controlling interest in the company that owned the track. The track currently uses Pikes Peak International Raceway in nearby Colorado as its western counterpart.

Also, Brands Hatch in London, England, is the home of the Grand Prix circuit. The track was first opened in 1950 and is often referred to as the English National Speedway because it is one of the biggest and most popular venues outside of the U.S. It is also host to the annual British Grand Prix, which is one of the events that make up the prestigious British Grand Prix Weekender.

Other notable international venues include the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Japan Racing Circuit in Tokyo, and the Australia Racing Circuit in Melbourne.

Now that you know the history and the general location of the stadium, let’s take a look at some of its most interesting facts.

The Record-Breaking Attendance

One of the first things that may strike you when visiting the stadium is that it is quite small compared to some of the other venues we have discussed so far. However, that is definitely not the case. The stadium can hold up to 4,000 people for concerts and other types of events, which makes it one of the largest venues in its class. In 2013, it held the record for the largest recorded attendance at an outdoor sports/music venue when it was filled to capacity for the Bob Dylan concert.

The venue has hosted many big-name concerts over the years, featuring various musical artists. Artists who have performed there include The Rolling Stones, The Who, U2, The Eagles, Elton John, and R.E.M. It has also hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards, the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve Show, and the Miss America Pageant. In April 2014, the stadium hosted the annual college baseball game between the University of Delaware and the Delaware State University, which has a total of 11,000 students combined.

The Most Famous Football Game

The venue is most famous for hosting the America’s Cup, which is an annual tennis tournament that pits the best American sailors against the best from all over the world. The competition was started in 1927 and is held every year in July. The last America’s Cup was held in 2021 and was won by Team Australia, which beat out Team China in the finals. The America’s Cup was originally held in Newport, Rhode Island, and has been hosted by various locations across the country, including Chicago Stadium, the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, and the Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California. The most recent America’s Cup was one of the most highly anticipated sporting events in recent years, largely because several of the teams were ranked in the top four worldwide at the beginning of the year.

The competition pits 12 American yacht clubs, including the Boston Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, and the Philadelphia Yacht Club, against 12 foreign yacht clubs from Europe, Japan, and South Africa. As mentioned previously, the stadium has also hosted the annual college football game between the University of Delaware and the Delaware State University. The rivalry is known as the Fishback 400 and was first played in 1964. It was named after former Delaware quarterback Bob Fishback, who played for the Blue Hens from 1951 to 1955 and went on to become the athletic director at Delaware State University.

The Largest Multi-Sport Event

The stadium is also the host of the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Tournament, which is an annual sevens tournament that pits various student teams from around the country against each other. The tournament was first held in 1998 and is one of the bigger annual multisport events in North America, comparable to the Canadian Interuniversity Sports men’s basketball and hockey championships. The USA Sevens Rugby Tournament is one of the biggest international rugby events that is not held in Africa or Europe and features various national teams from across the pond. Rugby is a very popular sport in the U.S., so much so that the national sevens rugby league team has qualified for the Olympics three times and the Rugby sevens world cup four times.

The Most Recent Makeover

One of the things that may not be apparent from a virtual tour of the venue is that it has had a fairly recent renovation. The stadium received a new synthetic turf in 2016, which was installed at a cost of $1.9 million and provides a more realistic playing surface. The synthetic grass was imported from Europe and is one of the biggest importations of its kind that has been seen in North America. In addition, the press box was upgraded with new seating and an expanded viewing area in 2018.
