Where Is Speedway Motors Located? [Answered!]

In case you’re wondering, the name “Speedway” doesn’t refer to the places in Texas where cars are really, really fast – it stands for Southwestern States Auto Racing Association, which organized speedway racing in the state back in the 1900s. The original intention of the organization was to build tracks and host races in the area.

The name “Speedway Motors” is used by a group of American businesspeople and enthusiasts who bought the rights to use the name in 2017, intending to bring the spirit of Texas speedway racing to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they’re based. In order to honor the original group, they’re calling their company “Speedway” as well. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the group, but they continue to organize races in Charlotte, with the first one taking place last month. The dates for future races are currently being determined, so stay tuned!

Where Do They Come From?

The story behind the name “Speedway Motors” begins more than a century ago. Back in 1914, two brothers named Harry and Joe Ransom established a business in Carthage, North Carolina, which specialized in car repairs and custom car building. Over the years, they grew the business into a full-fledged automotive garage that specialized in high-performance cars.

In the 1960s, the brothers got into car racing as well and built a track on their property – officially called the Ransom Brothers Speedway. The brothers died within a few years of each other in the early 2000s, and their two sons now run the business, along with a few other employees. They still use the same Ransom Brothers logo from the day they opened up shop more than a century ago. That’s why they’re known as “Ransom Motors.”

How Do They Structure Their Dealership?

It’s pretty standard for motor vehicle dealerships to be owned by individuals or corporations, but Ransom Motors have gone above and beyond, structuring their dealership as a limited liability company. The owners of the company are taking the risk of losing money on the business, rather than placing their personal assets in it. The company they formed is called the Southwestern States Auto Racing Association, LLC. Interestingly, one of the reasons they went above and beyond is to honor the legacy of their grandfathers, who were also car enthusiasts.

These granddads were big into sports, especially horse racing, and inspired the creation of the association. In order to comply with IRS regulations, they had to become a C-Corp in order to take on debt, which they did, and now they are known as “Speedway, Inc.” The Southwestern States Auto Racing Association, LLC is a separate entity from Speedway, Inc., and is owned by a different group of people. The two groups work closely together, however, and share the same office space in Charlotte.
