I have been asked this question hundreds of times since I began covering motorsport in 2016. Texas is the third-largest state in the U.S. with a population of over 28 million people. It is definitely the most popular state when it comes to motorsport, and with good reason. There are so many great race tracks in Texas, and it is difficult to narrow down the choices to just a few. In this article, I will discuss the biggest and best Texas racetracks and where you can find them.
The Top Three NASCAR Tracks In Texas
There are three NASCAR tracks in Texas that I believe are among the best in the country. They are:
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- San Antonio
The Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) area is the largest city in the state with over a million residents. It is also the largest metropolitan area in the country. While there are a lot of great restaurants there, hotels, and shopping centers, the true gem of the DFW area is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). This airport’s sleek new Terminal C opened for business on October 29, 2018 and handles over 300,000 passengers annually. It is designed to be a transformative project, bringing the airport into the 21st century while also raising the bar for what DFW can offer.
I have been to the airport several times, and each visit was an educational experience. The staff were incredibly accommodating, always happy to help pilots with any questions and to provide information on the state of the art facilities.
The Texas Motorplex, one of the original superspeedways, is located in Fort Worth and is one of the most popular NASCAR tracks in the country. The legendary stock car racer Lee Irwin was an integral part of the track’s early success and helped build the facility. Today, the track is owned and operated by Speedway Motorsports, Incorporated, a company whose sole purpose is to own and operate motorsport venues.
The Houston Sports Arena and the Toyota Center are two of the premier sports and entertainment venues in Houston. They both feature incredible views of the front row seats for the Oilers and Rangers games respectively. In addition, the Toyota Center also hosts the Rockets, and the arena is a mecca for musicians and comedians from all over the world.
The Houston Astrodome is one of the most recognizable sports and entertainment venues in the country, having recently been featured on American Idol. It also hosted Super Bowl XXV in 2005 and is the only stadium to have done so. Its breathtaking wraparound terrace makes it a popular wedding and party venue as well.
The San Antonio International Fairgrounds is certainly one of the most historic sports venues in all of Texas. It first opened its gates in 1911 and was the site of the 1936 World Championship for Athletic Fame. Since then, the San Antonio International Fairgrounds Hilton Hotel and Convention Center has been the site of many significant moments in NASCAR history. In addition to hosting NASCAR races, the Fairgrounds is also the site of the Texas State Fair, the San Antonio Bicycle Car Race, and the Kids Big Creek Carnival.
The Midway, the old name for the San Antonio International Fairgrounds, is among the best-known exhibition malls in the country. It features over 150 stores and restaurants and is home to the San Antonio Zoo. A visit to the mall is like going on an expedition to Burlington Vermont, where everything is large and in charge.
