So you wake up, decide to have a little fun and play Fortnite. You log on, join a game and begin to cruise around. Suddenly, BAM! You are in a world of hurt. You are in the middle of a deadly crash jam-packed with cars, walls, buildings and – worst of all – other players. It’s pandemonium.
Crash-helmet cameras, phones and social media help to make this world a bit more understandable. But once the initial shock wears off, you will wonder where the hell you are. Why are all these cars in my way? Is there another player around? Are these lasers…? What is going on?
The answer to these questions is quite simple. You have inadvertently strayed into the Chonkers Speedway. This hidden gem of a racing game is tucked away in Fortnite and it costs nothing to enter. You don’t even need to have the game to play there, as it is entirely text-based and can be easily accessed from anywhere.
With the help of a friend, you have been lured into a life of crime. You are going to steal cars, become better drivers and – most importantly – avoid being killed by other racers. You have three lives to save and it’s up to you which one you are going to spend them on. This game will expose any false sense of security you might have in life, as being in a car is one thing, but being in a car race is another!
Before we begin, it is important to note that there are no brakes in this game. This increases the danger factor and makes driving a lot more stressful. You have no way of knowing when a car is going to collide with you or stop suddenly in front of you. It’s like trying to negotiate a three way stop with nobody else around for miles… Good luck out there.
An Introduction To The Secret World Of Chonkers
If you have played Minecraft, you will have encountered the adorable little chonkers. These are the minecraftian counterparts to the traditional easter eggs, complete with little pigtails and a smile. The chonkers in Fortnite are little more than decoration as far as gameplay is concerned, as the real fun of this game comes from driving as fast as possible and avoiding disaster. It is a 2D side-scrolling game that was first released in Japan in 2012 and was later brought to the West by Genshin Impact in 2017.
The basic premise is that at the end of each race, the player with the most money wins. There are various ways to make money in the game, such as completing certain challenges or earning it from the races themselves. When you die, you lose all your money and the game ends. The object is to avoid dying by flying through as many cars as possible. But just because there are no brakes does not mean that this is an easy task. Every race is a battle for survival and it usually ends with one driver emerging victorious over the other.
If you do manage to stay alive for the whole race, you can then use your hard-earned cash to buy upgrades for your car. This allows you to enter faster races and helps you to better your ranking on the leaderboard. Upgrades include things like nitrous oxide tanks, more powerful tires, upgraded brakes and, in some cases, fully custom paint jobs.
How To Play
If you want to play this game, you will need a couple of things. First, you will need a decent PC or laptop to run it. The minimum requirements are a 1.6 GHz processor and 8 GB of RAM. Second, you will need a PlayStation® Plus membership, as this is where the game’s exciting functionality is housed. Finally, you will need the game itself. You can download it for free from the PlayStation® Store or the Xbox Games Store.
When you have all three of these items, you can launch the game by clicking the picture above or going into the store from your Xbox One dashboard and searching for the game. Once the game is up and running, you can click the gear icon in the top right to switch to the main menu. Here you can choose your character, enter a name for your racing team, choose how you want to play (free-roaming or limited to certain tracks) and finally, pick your car. You have four options here: Ford Mustang, Corvette, Dodge Charger and, for some reason, the Volkswagen Beetle. These are all pretty cool cars, but it is not always easy to tell them apart. Don’t worry, there are no wrong choices here. If you go for the Mustang, you will definitely be able to tell the difference between it and the other cars. But if you are playing on an Xbox, you might want to go for the Beetle instead, as it does not have the same profile as the other cars. This is the only one with a rotary dial on its steering wheel. This game does not take place in the present day, so the Beetle’s appearance does not fit quite right.
So you dive into your first race and begin to drive around. The controls are easy to understand and very responsive. Simply hold down the left arrow key and the car will accelerate in that direction. To turn, you use the right arrow key. Going straight will not get you anywhere, as there are no other cars around to avoid colliding with. In order to pass other racers, you have to leave them behind. You do this by entering a slide or a drift at the correct moment. Different types of drifts lead to different ways of increasing your speed. For example, a regular drift turns the vehicle in the direction it is facing and also slows it down. A front flip will make you go from zero to sixty in no time. For a more detailed explanation of the game’s controls, check out the instructions in the game itself. This is a classic case of a hidden gem that most people have never heard of, let alone played.
The Good And Bad
Let’s face it, not everyone has the time to play endless hours of Minecraft or the patience to complete a Dark Souls game. For those who want a short-burst of action and don’t have the time for a full-blown RPG, the Chonkers speedway is the perfect alternative. With only three lives to save and no true ending, it would be easy to become discouraged. But for those who manage to survive the first couple of races, the fun and excitement of entering more challenging situations will keep them coming back for more. And speaking of more challenging situations, as you progress through the game, the difficulty will ramp up quite a bit. After you beat the game once, you will be able to access the Challenge mode, where the fun will not be in the driving, but in the competition. After all, there is a reason this game does not have an easy mode.
Overall, this is a pretty fun game and something different to try out. It does have its frustrations with annoying crashes and sudden deaths, but they are just small nuisances that make the game more exciting. If you are looking for a different breed of racing game or have tried and tested all the mainstream titles and are in need of a change, then the Chonkers speedway would be a great choice.
