All You Can Eat
The All You Can Eat (A.Y.C.E) restaurant chain was founded in the late 1800s and is one of the country’s favorite restaurant franchises. A.Y.C.E restaurants feature all-you-can-eat buffets that allow diners to assemble a meal from a variety of delicious options. The chain is best known for their milkshakes, fried chicken, and lobster. While they aren’t the only restaurant franchise to offer all-you-can-eat services, they are one of the few that still offer a traditional dining experience. And who wouldn’t want to indulge in some French fries, potato salad, and an ice-tea-blended shake every now and then?
In the early 1900s, a number of A.Y.C.E restaurants were founded in Tennessee, and it wasn’t long before the chain began expanding outside of the state. By the 1970s, A.Y.C.E was operating in all 50 states and had over 500 restaurants. Today, there are still over 350 A.Y.C.E restaurants in operation, mostly located in the south and southeast.
The restaurants feature bright, colorful food décor and tables that are often arranged in a U-shape to allow for more people to eat together. As you might expect from a chain founded in the 1800s, dining at an A.Y.C.E restaurant is fairly nostalgic, with diners reminiscing about their childhood meals and sharing stories about the American food culture of the time. If you’re an A.Y.C.E fan, you may find it hard to find a quiet corner of the restaurant, as there are often loud conversations and children’s laughter filling the air. But, if you really want to indulge in some nostalgia, you could always sit at the bar or ask the server for a drink to go with your meal.
Although most people today think of fast food when it comes to American cuisine, the term actually refers to the cooking style of American pioneers. For example, when Nathan Scott founded the Waldorf Hotel in San Francisco in 1909, he served American fare at the hotel’s dining room. In the same year that the Waldorf opened, Adolphus Busch started serving beer and hot dogs from a truck parked outside his Bremerton Brewing Company. The beverage and food truck industry, as we know it, was thus conceived. Today, American cuisine is very common in restaurants across the country, although it’s not always easy to determine what is native to America and what has been influenced by European and other cuisines.
The invention of the hamburger is attributed to Scott. It was he who, in 1871, threw together a beef patty, American cheese, and ketchup (he initially settled on using pickles as the American addition, but they weren’t available in sufficient quantities) on a griddle and sold them to a man named Charlie Naglette. Naglette, in turn, gave the concoction the name he considered most fitting, the “hamburger.” As with many great ideas, however, there was debate over what should be the bun for the burger. Some people wanted a buntilla, which is a kind of bread. Others favored baking a burger in an oven. Still others suggested frying the burger in an oil-based medium. In the end, the hamburger was simply put on a platter with the condiments of the day – ketchup, mustard, and tomatoes – and served hot. The ingredients may have been American, but it was the method that was most memorable.
Since the 19th century, restaurants have offered a fine dining experience to customers who can pay for it. Typically, diners at these places order only from a list of items or eat what’s served, so that there’s no chance of food being served cold. However, some restaurants do offer a takeaway service so that customers can eat what they order in the comfort of their homes.
One of the most luxurious restaurants in England is named The Ritz and features some of the country’s finest chefs and the best cuisine available. Established in 1899, the Ritz is steeped in history, having been the location of many famous and luxurious banquets and private parties. In an age when most restaurants struggle to stay open past 5:00 p.m., the Ritz is open for dinner from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., allowing it to serve a more select audience.
California Steak Houses, Inc., the company that owns the Ritz, also owns and operates several other restaurants around the country, each one with its own distinct décor, menu, and signature dish. One of the restaurants, the White House Submarine Company, serves a six-inch sub filled with Canadian salmon, caviar, and cream cheese. A second location, the Hotel Chocolat, features a five-star chef who creates luxurious chocolate parfaits and rich chocolate milkshakes. Still another, The Spoleto, offers a taste of Spain, with paella dishes and chorizo, and chicken cooked in olive oil. Each location specializes in a specific cuisine and is designed to resemble a luxury hotel dining room. If you’ve ever been to London, you may well know this famous chain of restaurants. For those who haven’t, here’s a taste of what to expect: posh service, beautiful surroundings, and top-notch food. If you like a fine dining experience, the Ritz is worth a visit. And if you can’t make it to London for dinner, the restaurants offer several great ways to enjoy a gourmet meal, including via their website and app.
